Enjoying My Education

After I graduated from high school, I knew that traditional college just wasn't for me. I didn't like the idea of sitting through boring lectures, and I really wanted to work with my hands instead of sitting behind a desk. Fortunately, a friend of mine heard my complaints and had a great idea that completely changed my life. He suggested going to beauty school and told me about a friend's career that had taken off. I decided to enroll, and my experience was incredible. I was able to make lasting relationships and learn a trade that completely changed my life. Want To Be A Beautician But Have Arthritis? Follow These Tips And You Can Still Be One

If you would like to be a beautician, you are making a great career choice. According to the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), the salon industry brings in approximately $40 billion in sales each year. If you have arthritis, you can still handle this career and become a great beautician. You can do this by learning ways you can help with your arthritis pain.

Take Breaks and Exercise

During beauty school, you will be spending a lot of time on your feet. Once you have been in school long enough, you will start practicing on real people's hair. This may mean long days and a lot of haircuts. When you are between customers, take time to exercise. This can help alleviate stiffness you are likely feeling in places like your hands, legs, and arms, which can cause your arthritis pain to become worse.  Walk around inside the beauty school when you can, or get outside and take a short walk around the parking lot to keep your pain at bay.

Talk with your doctor about exercise routines you can do to help you with pain. They may suggest you see a therapist that is trained in helping people with arthritis. This can help you get through your day of cutting people's hair.

Use the Right Tools

If you have arthritis pain in your hands, you will find it difficult to grip things like a pair of scissors or thinning shears when you are in pain. Fortunately, there are ergonomic tools that are specially made for hair stylists. These tools will help reduce the strain standard cosmetology tools will place on your hands.  You can also purchase shoes that are specially made for people that have arthritis, which will be beneficial because you will be on your feet so much.

Stretching Exercises

Stretching your hands and body will help you stay comfortable and loose throughout your day. Start out at home with a hot shower in the morning, as you may feel more stiff when you first wake up. A hot shower can help your muscles loosen up.

After the shower, you can do some stretching to help your muscles stay loose throughout your day at beauty school. You should also do a few stretching exercises throughout the day if you feel pain that is coming on.

Learning how to manage your arthritis pain can help make your time going through beauty school a more enjoyable and positive one.
